Back in 2010, my family rescued my pup, Dolly. Her story is quite sad, actually. She was found in Tennessee on the side of a road in a car wreck that her mother was killed in, and someone took her and her siblings in. We adopted her through a shelter, and she was being fostered. I remember so vividly the night that we got the call that Dolly was going to be apart of MY family. She was just a few weeks old when we got her, so now it is so hard to believe that she is 6! I feel so blessed to been able to give Dolly the happy ending she desperately needed. Now she lives a life filled with love and lots of food.
Which brings me to my next point… treats?! Everyone loves their dog. I mean how could you not? They truly are man’s (or woman’s) best friend. And we all know what dogs love (besides us, of course)… their treats. My dog doesn’t do anything without a treat… is that her being smart or non-compliant? Maybe a little bit of both? Either way, my point is that Dolly eats a lot treats in a day. Just like it is important for us to be aware of what kind of food we put in our bodies, we could be a little more mindful of what we feed our adorable pups. Honestly, these “Love Your Dog” Treats are going to make you never want to buy a processed brand again. They are so quick and easy, and they require ingredients you most likely already have in your house. Oh, and your dog will love them.
There are 5 ingredients required: almond butter, a banana, almond flour, oil, and water.
Any nut butter will work and provide that flavor that dogs love!
I used olive oil, just because in an Italian household we buy olive oil in bulk, but any type of oil that you have in your house will do.
Basically, all you really have to do is combine the ingredients together. I like to mix the banana, nut butter, and oil first to get all the wet ingredients mixed before adding the flour. It is not totally necessary it just makes it easier. Then, once you add the flour and mix, you will see that the mix is too dry to make anything out of so all you have to do is add some water to finish the dough.
After the dough is made I like to refrigerate it for a little bit to make it easier to roll. I wrap the dough in plastic wrap and pop it in the fridge for 1-2 hours.
This dough was so easy to work with actually. When I bake cookies, generally, the dough gets stuck to the counter and rolling pin and all over my hands. Because dog treats require a different consistency and all, it was a lot easier to work with which sped up the time it took to make these already easy treats.
Of course, I used a heart shaped cookie cutter. “Love Your Dog”… get it? But obviously you can use any kind of cutter. If you don’t have any cookie cutters on hand, you could use the mouth of a glass to cut the treats. It is important that you roll out the dough to about 1/4” because of how dense it is. You want them to cook through.
It really only took me about 15 minutes to roll out all of the dough and cut it because like I said the dough was very easy to work with. Then you just place them on a cookie sheet, and pop them in the oven. They will not spread like regular cookie dough does so you can place them pretty close to one another.
So, I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit nervous that Dolly wouldn’t like these treats (she is quite picky), but man I was so wrong. She LOVED them!
In fact, she conned me into giving her 5 just to take this picture!
- ¼ cup almond butter
- 1½ cups almond flour
- ½ banana
- 1 tsp olive oil
- ½ cup water
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine the almond butter, banana, and oil until smooth.
- Add the almond flour ½ cup at a time, scraping the sides of the mixing bowl each time.
- Add water and mix until the dough is smooth.
- Refrigerate dough for 1-2 hours (optional).
- Roll out the dough on a clean, flat surface until it is spread evenly and about ¼" thick.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut the treats and place on the prepared cookie sheet.
- Place in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes. The color of the cookies should be even throughout. They will be super light and crispy on the edges.
- Cool for 5-10 minutes, and then feed your pup these yummy treats!
